Fix It Fast

How to Fix a Slow Laptop in 10 Minutes (Windows 10 & 11)

Updated for 2026 to reflect current UK emergency call-out pricing and insurance changes.

There is nothing worse than clicking an icon and waiting ten seconds for a program to open. Over time, Windows accumulates background processes, temporary files, and system updates that drag down performance. Before buying a new PC, try these simple, 10-minute software tweaks.

Time Needed: 10 Minutes

  • A Windows 10 or Windows 11 Laptop
  • Admin access to your computer
  • No physical tools required!

Quick Diagnosis: Is It Hardware or Software?

Is the internet slow, or is the computer itself slow? Open an offline program like Word or Notepad. If it takes forever to open, it’s a computer issue. If Word opens instantly but web pages take ages to load, you likely have a Wi-Fi issue (check our Router Fix Guide).

The 5-Step Speed Fix

Step 1: Check Task Manager and Kill Resource Hogs

When a laptop suddenly becomes incredibly slow, a rogue program is usually eating up all the CPU or RAM.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click “More details” if you only see a basic list.
  3. Click the “CPU” or “Memory” column headers to sort by highest usage.
  4. If an app you aren’t using is at the top (taking 50%+ CPU), right-click it and select “End task”.

Step 2: Disable Startup Programs

If your laptop takes 5 minutes to boot up, it’s because dozens of apps (Spotify, Skype, Adobe, game launchers) are trying to load the moment you turn it on.

  1. In Task Manager, click the Startup tab (or “Startup Apps” icon in Windows 11).
  2. Look at the list of programs. Right-click anything you don’t absolutely need immediately upon boot and select Disable.
  3. Note: This doesn’t delete the app; it just stops it from launching in the background automatically.

Step 3: Clear Temporary Files

Windows stores thousands of temporary cache files that can clog up your hard drive, especially if you have very little storage space remaining.

  • Open the Start Menu and type “Disk Cleanup”.
  • Select your main drive (usually C:).
  • Check the boxes for “Temporary Internet Files”, “Thumbnails”, and “Recycle Bin”.
  • Click OK and “Delete Files”.

Step 4: Update Windows and Drivers

Outdated system files can cause severe lag, especially if Windows is trying to run a background update but keeps failing. Open Settings > Update & Security and click “Check for Updates.” Let any pending updates install and restart your PC.

Step 5: Run a Malware Scan

Adware, spyware, or cryptomining viruses operate silently in the background, consuming all your computer’s processing power. Open Windows Security, go to “Virus & threat protection,” and run a “Quick scan.”

When Software Fixes Aren’t Enough (Hardware Upgrades)

If you have done all the software fixes and the laptop is still painfully slow, you have a hardware bottleneck. The two best upgrades are:

  • Upgrade to an SSD: If your laptop still uses an old spinning Hard Disk Drive (HDD), upgrading to a Solid State Drive (SSD) will make the computer feel 10x faster instantly.
  • Add more RAM: If you only have 4GB of RAM, opening Google Chrome will cause your PC to freeze. Upgrading to 8GB or 16GB is a cheap, highly effective fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does clearing my desktop make my laptop faster?

Yes, marginally. Windows has to render every icon and thumbnail on the desktop. Having hundreds of loose files on your desktop uses up system RAM.

Why is my fan so loud when my laptop is slow?

When the CPU is working at 100%, it generates intense heat. The fans spin at maximum speed to prevent the laptop from melting. This usually indicates a background program is hogging resources, or the internal cooling vents are blocked by dust.

Will a factory reset fix a slow laptop?

Yes. If your PC is bogged down by years of installed software and registry errors, backing up your files and performing a “Reset this PC” (found in Settings) will restore out-of-the-box software performance.
